The central figure in the Uncle Remus stories, he is a tricky and arrogant little character whose overconfidence frequently gets him into jams. He then uses his cleverness to extricate himself. Sometime, as with Brer Terrapin, he is fooled. Such stories were well known as part of the folklore of the Old South. Theodore Roosevelt wrote about hearing them as a child from an aunt from Georgia.
