The Skaters

Ice skating probably began as a convenient means of transportation in cold countries. By the 19th century, though, it was a normal part of winter recreation for the old and young alike. We find it expressed as such in the art and literature of the period. Its attractiveness is easy to understand. There is no way for a person to go faster, under his own power, than on ice. The absence of friction allows a grace of movement unknown on land. Skating can be social or competitive. It is very democratic. People from all walks of life could enjoy it. A pair of skates and some cold weather and you were in business. These ornaments represent that time and spirit.
