The painter of mythical America. His 321 covers on the Saturday Evening Post over 47 years were the hallmarks of an era. When one of his paintings appeared on the cover, 75,000 more copies were sold on the newsstands. Instantly recognizable, then and now, his paintings for that magazine presented the wholesome innocence of the country: Boy Scouts, fishing, country doctors, family outings, the pleasure of a new automobile and other rites of passage. He once said, ”Without thinking too much about it in specific terms, I was showing the America I knew and observed to others who might not have noticed.”
